It was implied that Gen had been dealt a fatal blow by Akuma during the events of Street Fighter 5. However, Capcom Director Takayuki Nakayama has recently confirmed that Gen is still active around the time of Street fighter 6.

Of course, around when Chun-Li was first revealed to be playable in Street Fighter 6, it was immediately noticed that she had adopted a number of Gen's postures and movements. When asked about this, Nakayama revealed why this appears to be the case.

"It is not surprising that Chun-Li and Gen are meeting somewhere," responded Nakayama. "Chun-Li's late father, Dorai, learned some of his techniques from Gen."

Many forms of media have indicated that Chun-Li was taught martial arts by her father. By the time of Street Fighter 6, Chun-Li has retired as an Interpol officer and now spends her time teaching Kung Fu.

While it doesn't quite work the same way as Gen's stance change from previous games, one of the new additions to Chun-Li's arsenal in Street Fighter 6 is her Serenity Stream. Though different in function, this is effectively a stance change for Chun-Li.

Thanks to these differences, Gen's chances as a future addition in Street Fighter 6 haven't been nixed yet. Of course, we could also see the developers reworking Gen's moveset as they have done with other characters.

And just to clarify, Nakayama is pretty confident that Chun-Li's father is actually deceased (which is a rarity in the Street Fighter universe). In other words, Chun-Li would've had to have been taught these techniques before Street Fighter 2.
