It's been over half a year since the last Kameo, Ferra, was released as DLC content for Mortal Kombat 1. Curiously, when the Kombat Pack 2 was first unveiled, NetherRealm Studios did not reveal any new Kameo characters slated to join the roster.

In the latest teaser trailer for the Kombat Pack 2's final challenger, the T-1000, it was also suddenly revealed that Madam Bo would be joining as a new Kameo. She's set to join Mortal Kombat 1 alongside the T-1000 on March 18.

Previously, a number of "insiders" supposedly leaked how post-launch support for Mortal Kombat 1 was ending as a direct result of the subpar performance of the Khaos Reigns story expansion.

According to these rumors, Jade, Cassie, Kung Jin, Sonya, Kano, and some unknown guest character were all in consideration for "Kombat Pack 3." Due to the sudden cancellation, we would at most only get a few Kameo characters as DLC content going forward.

It's interesting to note that Madam Bo was never specifically mentioned as a Kameo that could be joining the Mortal Kombat 1 roster. Of course, no names for Kameos were ever shared to begin with.

Back in late December of last year, we stumbled on some mysterious images for a new design for Kung Jin. Considering all of this, it felt like Kung Jin was slated to become a Kameo as it appeared that his assets had already been developed when he was originally set to become a playable character (as the rumors suggested).

Although it's never been outright confirmed that NetherRealm Studios was ending their post-launch support for Mortal Kombat 1, Ed Boon made an especially vague statement about the game's future. He pretty much just confirmed that DLC would continue after Conan the Barbarian, which didn't really say much considering that the T-1000 was always set to be released following Conan.

Prior to this, Ed Boon expressed his wish that he could be more forthcoming regarding the rumors that had been surfacing about Mortal Kombat 1's future. Understandably, he couldn't really provide a confirmation about what was going on.

So what does Madam Bo's announcement tell us about all of this? Unfortunately, the future is as uncertain as ever.

While Madam Bo's announcement is a nice surprise for Mortal Kombat 1 fans, it does fit along with the narrative that the game's post-launch support is approaching some sort of finale. Even though nobody called Madam Bo, it was expected that there would be a few more Kameos added before DLC content was concluded.

However, this does not yet confirm what the supposed insiders have indicated. In order for this to be confirmed or disconfirmed, NetherRealm Studios will either have to reveal a new DLC character or outright declare that they had moved on to their next project, similar to what happened with Mortal Kombat 11.
